Lactoseintolrance
I would like to point out in advance that I am NOT a doctor. If you experience any discomfort, please seek professional help!
Lactose intolerance is an intolerance to milk sugar (lactose) due to an enzyme deficiency.
Primary lactose intolerance is genetic and is further divided into two forms:
Congenital lactase deficiency (inherited lactose intolerance) is rare and occurs due to a congenital, autosomal recessive defect in the lactase gene itself. Due to the defect, the enzyme lactase cannot be produced and lactose intolerance occurs immediately after birth.
Lack of lactase persistence (adult lactose intolerance) is the most common cause of lactose intolerance and occurs due to a genetic change that switches off lactase production after weaning. This gene silencing is based on cytosine methylation in the MCM6 enhancer of the lactase gene, which is located about 14 kb upstream of the gene.[1]
In the secondary form of lactose intolerance, gastrointestinal diseases such as:
- Sprue
- Crohn’s disease of the small intestine
- Rotavirus gastroenteritis
lead to damage to the brush border epithelia and thus to a lack of lactase.” (Source: https://flexikon.doccheck.com/de/Laktoseintoleranz)
